El Niño is a climate phenomenon that begins in the tropical Pacific Ocean but can influence weather thousands of kilometers away. Africa is one of the continents where its effects can be significant, although the results are not the same everywhere.

The impacts depend on the strength and timing of an El Niño event and its interaction with other climate patterns, including conditions in the Indian and Atlantic oceans. The World Meteorological Organization identifies El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole among the major climate drivers affecting African rainfall.

1. East Africa Can Become Much Wetter

El Niño is commonly associated with increased rainfall in equatorial East Africa.

The strongest connection is often seen during the October-to-December short-rains season. The World Meteorological Organization notes that El Niño is typically associated with wetter-than-normal conditions in East Africa during this period.

2. Southern Africa Can Experience Drier Conditions

The pattern is different in much of southern Africa.

The World Health Organization identifies El Niño as being associated with drier conditions in southern Africa.

This can affect rainfall-dependent agriculture, water supplies and ecosystems across the region.

3. The Same El Niño Can Produce Opposite Conditions

One of the most important facts about El Niño in Africa is that it does not create one continent-wide weather pattern.

During the same event, East Africa can experience unusually heavy rainfall while parts of southern Africa experience drought conditions.

The different outcomes result from the continent's enormous size and the way global atmospheric circulation interacts with regional climate systems.

4. Flooding Can Become a Major Risk

Wetter conditions associated with El Niño can increase the likelihood of heavy rainfall and flooding in parts of East Africa.

The WMO's State of the Climate in Africa 2024 report noted that an El Niño event and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole phase both influenced rainfall patterns during 2024.

5. Drought Can Affect Southern Agriculture

In southern Africa, reduced rainfall during El Niño events can place pressure on agricultural production.

The relationship is particularly important in countries where farming depends heavily on seasonal rainfall.

The exact effect differs by country and by season, so El Niño cannot be treated as a guaranteed drought signal for every location.

6. El Niño Does Not Affect Every African Region Equally

North Africa, the Sahel, East Africa and southern Africa respond differently to large-scale climate patterns.

The WMO identifies the interaction of ENSO with Atlantic and Indian Ocean sea-surface temperatures as an important factor in determining African rainfall.

That is why climate scientists examine several indicators rather than relying on the Pacific Ocean alone.

7. El Niño Can Affect Disease Patterns

Changes in rainfall and temperature can influence the conditions in which disease vectors thrive.

The WHO notes that ENSO events have been associated with changes in vector-borne diseases, heat stress, wildfire smoke exposure and drought-related health and nutritional impacts.

These relationships are not identical in every country.

8. The 2023–2024 El Niño Was Important for Africa

El Niño conditions continued from 2023 into the second quarter of 2024.

The WMO reported that the event, together with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, played a major role in rainfall patterns across Africa during 2024.

After the El Niño phase weakened, neutral-to-weak La Niña conditions prevailed during the remainder of the year.

9. Climate Change Can Intensify Some Impacts

El Niño itself is a natural climate phenomenon.

The WMO states that there is currently no evidence that climate change increases the frequency or intensity of El Niño events. However, a warmer atmosphere and ocean can increase the amount of heat and moisture available for extreme weather, potentially amplifying some associated impacts.

10. El Niño Is Only One Part of Africa's Climate System

African rainfall is influenced by several interacting systems.

These include ENSO, the Indian Ocean Dipole, Atlantic sea-surface temperatures, regional circulation and local geography.

The WMO's 2024 climate report specifically describes natural climate drivers as playing a role alongside the longer-term effects of climate change.

El Niño is therefore not simply a Pacific Ocean event with a single African consequence. It can mean heavy rain and flooding in one part of the continent while contributing to dry conditions somewhere else.
