African football has produced players who have worn the shirts of some of the most recognised clubs in world football. African stars have played important roles in some of Europe's biggest competitions.
This list focuses on African players who have represented major internationally recognised clubs, particularly teams with extensive histories in the UEFA Champions League and Europe's top domestic leagues. It is not a ranking of the players.
1. Samuel Eto’o – Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea
Cameroon's Samuel Eto’o reached some of the highest levels of European football during a career that included four major clubs.
He joined Real Madrid as a teenager and made first-team appearances before establishing himself at Mallorca. He then moved to Barcelona, where he became one of the club's leading forwards.
Eto’o won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2006 and 2009 before joining Inter Milan. In 2010, he became part of José Mourinho's Inter side that won the Champions League, making him a three-time winner of the competition.
His career also included a season at Chelsea in 2013/14. Chelsea's records show that he made 35 appearances and scored 12 goals for the club. UEFA records list Eto’o among Africa's most experienced Champions League players.
2. Didier Drogba – Chelsea and Marseille
Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba became closely associated with Chelsea after joining the London club from Marseille in 2004.
He spent several seasons at Stamford Bridge and became one of Chelsea's leading goalscorers. His biggest European moment came in the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich, when he scored Chelsea's equaliser before converting the decisive penalty in the shootout.
Drogba also returned to Chelsea later in his career and helped the club win another Premier League title in 2014/15.
UEFA records list him among Africa's leading Champions League scorers, with 44 goals in the competition.
3. Michael Essien – Lyon, Chelsea and Real Madrid
Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien played for several major European clubs, including Lyon, Chelsea and Real Madrid.
His move to Chelsea in 2005 turned him into an important part of the club's midfield during one of its most successful periods. He won Premier League titles and the Champions League with Chelsea.
Essien also spent time at Real Madrid during the 2012/13 season, reuniting with José Mourinho.
UEFA's historical records place Essien among Africa's most experienced Champions League players, with more than 70 appearances in the competition.
4. Yaya Touré – Barcelona and Manchester City
Ivory Coast's Yaya Touré represented Barcelona before becoming one of Manchester City's most important midfielders.
At Barcelona, he was part of the squad that won the 2008/09 Champions League. He moved to Manchester City in 2010 and became a major figure during the club's rise to the top of English football.
Touré won multiple Premier League titles with City and scored 59 Premier League goals for the club. His European career also included Champions League football with both Barcelona and Manchester City.
5. Kolo Touré – Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool
Yaya Touré's older brother Kolo also built a career at some of England's most famous clubs.
The Ivorian defender joined Arsenal in 2002 and was part of the famous unbeaten Premier League team of 2003/04.
He later moved to Manchester City, where he won the Premier League, before joining Liverpool. UEFA records credit him with 67 Champions League appearances across his career.
6. Mohamed Salah – Chelsea and Liverpool
Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah has represented two of the Premier League's most recognisable clubs.
He joined Chelsea in 2014 after establishing himself in Switzerland with Basel. His first spell in England was short, and he later moved to Italy before returning to the Premier League with Liverpool in 2017.
At Liverpool, Salah became one of the club's leading goalscorers and helped the team win the 2019 Champions League and Premier League titles.
Liverpool confirmed his departure in 2026 after 442 appearances and 257 goals for the club. UEFA's records also place him among the leading African players in Champions League history.
7. Sadio Mané – Liverpool and Bayern Munich
Senegal's Sadio Mané played for Liverpool and Bayern Munich after establishing himself in European football with Red Bull Salzburg and Southampton.
At Liverpool, he formed part of an attacking partnership that helped the club win the 2019 Champions League and the 2019/20 Premier League.
He then joined Bayern Munich in 2022 and won the Bundesliga during his first season in Germany.
UEFA lists Mané among Africa's leading Champions League performers, with 27 goals through the end of the 2025/26 season.
8. Riyad Mahrez – Manchester City
Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez became a major Premier League name after helping Leicester City win the 2015/16 league title.
His performances earned him a move to Manchester City in 2018. At City, Mahrez won several major domestic trophies and was part of the squad that completed the club's historic treble in 2022/23.
That campaign ended with Manchester City winning the Champions League for the first time. UEFA's records list Mahrez among Africa's leading Champions League goalscorers.
9. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal and Barcelona
Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has also played for several major European clubs.
He became one of Borussia Dortmund's leading forwards after joining the German club in 2013. He later moved to Arsenal, where he won the FA Cup and became the club's captain.
Aubameyang subsequently played for Barcelona and Chelsea, giving him a rare club résumé that includes major teams in Germany, England and Spain.
His career has also included Marseille and, as of September 2026, Deportivo La Coruña. Recent Spanish league records reported him at the top of the African goalscorer list across Europe's five major leagues.
10. George Weah – Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan
Liberia's George Weah played for Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan during a career that established him as one of Africa's most famous footballers.
He joined PSG in 1992 and later moved to AC Milan, where he became a major attacking figure.
In 1995, Weah won the Ballon d'Or, becoming the first African player to receive the award. UEFA's historical records also recognise his Champions League goals for PSG and Milan.
