When people think of the global space race, they usually picture NASA, Russia, or private billionaires launching rockets from Florida. But a quieter, highly practical space race has been happening right across Africa.

Over the last few decades, nearly 20 African nations have successfully built, launched, and operated satellites in low-Earth orbit. These aren't vanity projects meant to score political points. Instead, governments and regional engineers are deploying orbital assets to manage agriculture, track climate shifts, boost internet access, and handle disaster responses.

The following African countries have established active space programs and placed their own hardware into orbit.

1. Egypt

Egypt is an undisputed pioneer of African space exploration. As the first country on the continent to launch a satellite into space with Nilesat-101 back in 1998, Egypt has spent decades expanding its capabilities. The country hosts the Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) and commands a robust fleet of communications and Earth-observation satellites, including the EgyptSat and TIBA series. Egypt also plays a central regional role by hosting the headquarters of the African Space Agency.

2. South Africa

South Africa boasts one of the most technologically advanced and well-funded space programs on the continent. Managed largely through the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), the country’s space history stretches back to early projects like SUNSAT. Today, South Africa operates multiple earth-observation satellites, manages crucial deep-space tracking stations for international space agencies, and builds cutting-edge university-backed nanosatellites like the ZACube series.

3. Nigeria

Nigeria has long recognized space technology as a vital driver for national development. Managed by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), the country launched its first satellite, NigeriaSat-1, in 2003 as part of an international disaster monitoring constellation. Nigeria has since deployed several advanced optical and communications satellites, utilizing high-resolution imagery to monitor food security, manage urban growth, and track security threats.

4. Algeria

Algeria entered the space arena early and has steadily built a formidable orbital portfolio through the Algerian Space Agency (ASAL). Beginning with AlSat-1 in 2002, the country has launched a succession of Earth-observation and environmental-monitoring satellites. Algeria's satellites are heavily utilized for domestic resource management, desertification tracking, disaster mitigation, and border surveillance.

5. Morocco

Morocco’s footprint in space has grown dramatically through ambitious investments in high-resolution Earth observation. Operating advanced satellites such as the Mohammed VI-A and Mohammed VI-B spacecraft, Morocco uses its orbital assets primarily for cartography, agricultural planning, border surveillance, and natural disaster monitoring. The country is also expanding its international profile by partnering with global aerospace entities and signing the Artemis Accords.

6. Angola

Angola made a massive splash in African telecommunications with the deployment of AngoSat-2. After overcoming initial setbacks with its predecessor, Angola successfully launched AngoSat-2 to expand high-speed internet connectivity, television broadcasting, and telecommunications infrastructure across the country and the broader central African region, bridging the digital divide for rural communities.

7. Kenya

Kenya has proven that you do not need a multi-billion-dollar state budget to make an impact in space. Through local engineering teams and universities, Kenya launched its operational nanosatellite, 1KUNS-PF, from the International Space Station, followed by earth-observation tools like Taifa-1. Kenya’s space framework, overseen by the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), focuses heavily on leveraging satellite data for agricultural mapping, urban planning, and maritime security.

8. Rwanda

Rwanda is rapidly establishing itself as an emerging tech and aerospace hub in East Africa. Through the Rwanda Space Agency (RSA), the country has deployed its own low-Earth orbit satellites, such as RwaSat-1. Rwanda utilizes orbital data to optimize small-scale farming, monitor environmental changes, and improve broadband connectivity. Furthermore, Rwanda was among the earliest African signatories of the Artemis Accords, committing to transparent and collaborative space exploration.

9. Ethiopiaa

Ethiopia entered the space age with the launch of its multi-spectral remote-sensing satellite, ET-RSS, developed in collaboration with international partners. Backed by the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI) and the famous Entoto Observatory and Research Center, Ethiopia uses its space program to track weather patterns, mitigate climate-related agricultural crises, and train the next generation of East African aerospace engineers.

10. Other Rising Nations (Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Sudan, and More)

Beyond the top tier, a growing wave of nations are leaving their mark. Tunisia builds indigenous Internet of Things (IoT) nanosatellites like Challenge ONE, Zimbabwe has deployed earth-observation tech like ZimSat-1, and countries like Sudan, Mauritius, Djibouti, and Senegal have successfully pushed hardware into orbit to manage local infrastructure and data needs.
