Africa’s contribution to science and technology is much broader than the inventions most people usually associate with the continent. Some African innovations changed how people move money, monitor wildlife and build infrastructure, while others became part of modern medicine.
Here are 10 African inventions and innovations with documented links to everyday life, science, medicine and modern technology.
1. M-Pesa
Kenya’s M-Pesa changed the way millions of people handle money using a mobile phone. Launched by Safaricom and Vodafone in March 2007, the service originally focused on sending money between users. It later expanded into payments, savings, bill payments, credit and other financial services.
The original idea can be traced to a 2003 proposal to use mobile phones to deliver financial services. By 2005, M-Pesa was being tested in Kenya, and its first users quickly discovered that sending money to each other was more useful than the original loan-repayment concept.
2. Pratley Putty
South African engineer George Pratley developed Pratley Putty in the 1960s with chemist Frank Robinson. The epoxy adhesive was originally developed for electrical applications but later found many other uses.
Its unusual place in history came in 1969 when Pratley Putty was carried aboard Apollo 11’s Eagle lunar module. South African History Online records it as the only South African product to reach the Moon during the historic mission.
3. The CT Scanner’s Mathematical Foundation
South African physicist Allan M. Cormack made a crucial contribution to the mathematics behind computer-assisted tomography. His work helped establish the principles that allowed X-ray measurements to be reconstructed into images of the inside of the human body.
Cormack shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with British engineer Godfrey Hounsfield for the development of computer-assisted tomography. Cormack’s work was shaped partly by his experience at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.
4. The 17D Yellow Fever Vaccine
South African-born scientist Max Theiler developed the 17D strain used for the yellow fever vaccine. His research weakened the virus sufficiently to create a vaccine capable of protecting people from yellow fever.
Theiler was awarded the 1951 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries concerning yellow fever and how to combat it. The Nobel Foundation records that the 17D variant became the basis of the human vaccine.
5. CyberTracker
South Africa’s CyberTracker connected traditional San tracking knowledge with digital technology. Louis Liebenberg and collaborators developed the system in the 1990s so wildlife trackers could record observations using icons and handheld computers.
The system became particularly important because expert trackers did not need conventional literacy to record detailed wildlife observations. The World Intellectual Property Organization describes CyberTracker as a tool combining traditional tracking knowledge with modern technology for conservation and scientific research.
6. The Dolos
The dolos is a large, irregularly shaped concrete structure developed in South Africa for protecting harbour walls and coastal infrastructure from powerful waves.
Unlike a conventional solid barrier, its shape allows water energy to be dispersed around the structure. The design became associated with South African harbour engineering and has been used in coastal protection projects beyond the country.
7. M-Pesa’s Agent Model
The innovation behind M-Pesa was not simply the mobile wallet itself. Its network of local agents changed how people could convert physical cash into digital money and back again.
The model became particularly significant in areas where conventional banking infrastructure was limited. A World Health Organization report noted that Kenya had more than 95% of households outside Nairobi with at least one M-Pesa account at the time of its study, alongside a very large agent network.
8. South Africa’s First Human Heart Transplant
In 1967, South African surgeon Christiaan Barnard led the medical team that performed the world's first human-to-human heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.
Although transplantation itself was not invented in South Africa, the operation marked a major milestone in modern medicine and placed Cape Town at the centre of one of the most significant medical developments of the 20th century.
9. Digital Wildlife Tracking From the Kalahari
CyberTracker also represents something unusual in the history of technology. It did not simply replace traditional knowledge with computers. It used digital tools to preserve and record knowledge developed through generations of wildlife tracking.
The first CyberTracker field system was tested in South Africa in 1996, with icon-based interfaces allowing trackers to record observations without relying on written language.
10. Mobile Money as a Daily Payment System
The influence of Kenya’s mobile-money innovation extended far beyond person-to-person transfers. M-Pesa became part of ordinary transactions, including purchasing goods, paying bills, buying airtime and making business payments.
Safaricom reported in 2024 that the platform had developed into a broader financial technology ecosystem, with services available through USSD and its smartphone Super App.
Africa’s technology story therefore includes inventions that are visible in hospitals, financial systems, conservation work, engineering projects and ordinary mobile-phone transactions. Some were physical products, while others were systems that changed how existing technology could be used.
